When we want to step into the presence of God, the quickest way can often be found in a song.
Paul teaches us in Colossians 3:16 to "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord."
Believers over the centuries have taken these words to heart and have found strength, encouragement and guidance in the act of worship.
We also can live out our faith by singing hymns in our assisted living apartments. By remembering these classics and lifting our voices in song, we can find an outlet for the many emotions caused by the blessings and sorrows of this life and feel the Spirit of God drawing us closer in our relationship with Him.
The number of good hymns is too vast to cover in this short list, but here are a few old standbys to warm up your vocal cords.
Music has an amazing effect on our heart and minds. It can help us overcome anxiety during hardship and improve our mood in day-to-day life.
As you enjoy your favorite hymns and the benefits of singing them, why not consider asking other residents around our Grand Villa assisted living community to join you?
Put together a group of like-minded souls and take turns hosting an hour of worship in your senior apartments or one of the common areas. If the weather is pleasant, gather outside in the gardens and choose nature-themed hymns, such as All Creatures of Our God and King and All Things Bright and Beautiful.
Encourage fellowship among your members by letting everyone share special memories of songs they heard growing up in church or on the radio, and include songs everyone remembers from Sunday School to your list. Favorites to consider are Jesus Loves Me, This Little Light of Mine, Count Your Blessings and I've Got the Joy for a real trip down memory lane.
If someone you know is sick, go visit and offer to sing their favorite hymns. The simple act of being thought of and cared for can do wonders to improve their day and help them feel better.
Though they may seem simple, these song-based activities will help keep your own body and mind healthy and give you the chance to create happy memories with God and your neighbors.
