Want to kick off the advent season with an appropriate Bible study in your assisted living apartment? Whether you're reading Scripture and contemplating it individually in the morning or gathering for group discussions in the common areas at Grand Villa, here are some passages that are appropriate to work in to your study this season.
Luke 1-2
Luke provides a comprehensive look at the miraculous Virgin birth, from the foreshadowing of John the Baptist and the angel's visit to Mary through to the manger scene and subsequent presentation of Jesus in the temple.
These chapters hold some of the most cherished Christmas verses, including the proclamation of the angels, who sang "Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests."
Long-time Christians will likely know these stories very well, so when studying them, ask questions such as:
Matthew 1-2
These chapters present a genealogy of Jesus, tell us a bit more about Joseph's perspective on the story and include the visit of the three wise men. Again, seniors may be familiar with these stories, so looking at them from a different perspective or looking for applications to your life right now can be a good idea. You might also want to study the Christmas story by combining a study of the first part of Matthew with the correlating chapters in Luke.
Passages from Isaiah
Want a different spin on your advent Bible study? Consider some of the prophecies about Jesus's birth from Isaiah, including:
Alternatively, you can make a list of Old Testament prophecies about the Christmas story. In addition to the passages listed above, you might include:
By combing the Bible for references to the birth and lordship of Christ, you can see how the entire Bible is the story of God's plan for His people and the coming of Christ, who laid down His life for ours and who reigns as Lord of Lords over all the earth.
Continuing Your Own Bible Study
You don't have to delve into specific passages about the birth of Christ to celebrate advent during your Scripture study, though. Because the entire Bible is all part of that one great story, every passage has a relevance to the season and to Christ.
As you study Scripture in your assisted living apartment or community this season, simply ask yourself what each passage has to teach you about Christ or His role in your life.
